ASSESMENT TASK

MAY 2010

POWER SUPPLY LOAD TESTER

By: N Despinidic

INTRODUCTION

This assessment task consists of two parts. You need to produce a working model of the “Load Tester”. Secondly you need to produce a report showing the cost of the total unit. This report needs to be neat and legible and written in a way that a production manager can work out his cost for as many units as he wishes to make.

    You will be provided with:

·         The PCB.

·         A copy of the parts layout.

·         A copy of the overlay.

·         All parts to complete the project excluding the plastic box.

PROCEDURE

You may wish to use the copy of the overlay as a visual panel on your board. In this case you need to cover it with a clear plastic sheet and drill holes for the components.

1.    Drill out the mounting holes so that the screws for the GPO box fit easily.

2.    Drill out the holes for the 5watt resistors so that they are easily placed.

3.    Clean the ends of the 5watt resistors so that they solder easily.

4.    Mount the “Molex 20way socket to the board and solder.

5.    Place the rest of the components on the board and solder as you require.

6.    Check each solder joint for integrity. It should be shiny, and not have  too much solder around it yet enough to be a strong joint.

7.    Align the component the same way for easy reading of their values.

8.    When finished arrange for a GPO box to mount the unit.

9.    Parts shown without values may be left out.

10. Bend the resistors neatly before inserting in to position.

11. Note the polarity of the diodes as per instructions.

PART TWO

You need to produce a report showing the cost of each item and the total production cost for the unit.
